Greg’s Travel Blog – Dolly Steamboat

Arizona is home to dozens of lakes, but one of my favorites is Canyon Lake. Only a little over an hour’s drive from Phoenix, the lake is one of four reservoirs that was formed by damming the Salt River as part of the Salt River Project.  This lake offers many types of recreation including boating, skiing, and camping, but recently I had the pleasure of taking a cruise on the Dolly Steamboat around Canyon Lake.

We enjoyed the Scenic Nature Cruise, which is a 1.5-hour cruise around the lake.  You can sit back, relax and take in the gorgeous views of Canyon Lake.  During the six-mile cruise, not only will you see the natural rock formations that encircle this lake, but you will also spot native wildlife. We were fortunate enough to see desert bighorn sheep.  You may also be able to spot a bald eagle, burros, or a host of other animals and local wildlife viewed right from the decks of the Dolly! The tour also describes the beautiful flora from the stately Saguaro cacti to the microscopic organism called desert varnish. I know what you’re thinking with the summer heat approaching. Don’t worry, you can beat the heat with the climate-controlled lower and upper decks.

Send us a picture if you decide to go on this amazing cruise!

The Scenic Nature Tour is $30.  They also offer dinner cruises at twilight that start at $80 per person.
